Press Release: New Recognition Program for Canadian Pet Stores

OTTAWA, ON (August 19, 2016) -  PIJAC Canada is proud to launch the Best Management Practices Program for Pet Retailers (BMP's) at ExpoZoo 2016
Over 3 years in the making, this program was developed to support pet businesses in their day to day operations and to educate consumers about care practices thereby opening the door for important conversations.  Businesses who choose to participate in the BMP program use it as a set of guidelines and as a tool to demonstrate to the community their health practices and dedication to proper animal husbandry.

The program is a mechanism to help differentiate the substandard operators from the excellent ones.  Operators that prioritize the health of the animals in their care, value the importance of providing proper information to their staff and customers and want to provide the best overall pet experience possible.

Communities want transparency especially in the way animals are tended. Responsible pet businesses follow these basic guidelines as part of their daily operations. If a member of the public has a question they can also request the guidelines as provided by the participating business and PIJAC Canada. The onus is on the operators as they are the ones that attest to BMP’s. Should any serious concerns arise regarding the welfare of animals in a business setting, issues are addressed through the proper authorities in that region such as SPCA or municipal enforcement.

Developed with input from other international pet organizations and the veterinary community, the program has been in a trial phase with retailers for the last few months.  “We are grateful for everyone’s input and see this as an ever evolving project.” says Louis McCann, CEO of PIJAC Canada,  " The association’s role has always been one of guidance, not enforcement and as such this program is voluntary.  It is our goal that one day it will make it into the law books.  We feel offering this program is the next step up in caring for Canada's pets."

Pet Professionals Get the Latest Dish on Freshwater Fish
OTTAWA, ON – July 18, 2016 PIJAC Canada (Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council of Canada) is proud to announce the release of their Freshwater Fish Pet Care Training Program.  The sixth and final installment in their Certified Companion Animal Specialist series developed specifically for pet professionals.

Through a fun and quirky FHarmony and Plenty of Freshwater Fish Dating campaign the association looks to use the (sometimes inner) beauty of these aquatic species to engage pet professional and fish enthusiasts across the continent with this easy to use online program.  Members and fish fans everywhere are encouraged to create their own humorous profile to share on PIJAC Canada’s Facebook page for a chance to win or to give away a copy of the program.

“Fresh water fish make amazing pets for people of all ages and backgrounds and have long been a mainstay of our industry.  Caring for these animals takes some special know-how and a well trained staff that can pass along the right information helps ensure happy pet families for generations.”, says Jacynthe Lacroix, Education Coordinator for PIJAC Canada.

With the wild success of Disney’s “Finding Dory”, the industry is working very hard to teach people interested in fish how to select the best species for them, many of whom are beginners.  It’s no secret freshwater fish are great way to start into the hobby.  PIJAC Canada’s program is an extremely affordable and comprehensive way to ensure staff is up to speed on fish care.

The Freshwater Fish program along with canine, feline, reptile, avian and small mammal specialities can be found on the PIJAC Canada website under Programs.  “We run this program on a break even basis. Our goal is not to turn a profit, but to educate as many people as possible about proper animal care.  By offering these training options to professionals, we help them to foster positive pet experiences with their clients, ultimately building long term pet relationships.“ say Louis McCann, President of the association.  “A well trained staff, makes for happy, healthy pet families and loyal clients for life”.

Mountain Dog Foods Awarded HACCP certification - Press Release

For Immediate Release
Mountain Dog Foods Awarded HACCP certification

Edmonton, Alberta (July 12, 2016) – Mountain Dog Foods is the first Canadian raw pet food manufacturer to be awarded the prestigious Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point System (HACCP) certification.  The HACCP certification is the world-wide standard in human food manufacturing.

“HACCP is a management system in which food safety is addressed through the analysis and control of biological, chemical and physical hazards from raw material production, procurement and handling, to manufacturing, distribution and consumption of the finished product” US Food and Drug Administration

Mountain Dog Foods was instrumental in setting the standard for the raw food industry in Canada under the Canadian Association of Raw Pet Food Manufacturers.
CARPFM was founded in 2007 by a group of concern raw food manufacturers who felt that frozen pet food required manufacturing standards: including independent third party inspection of the manufacturing facility, their material handling and documentation. Members in good standing have been inspected and have met or exceeded the association's Good Manufacturing Practices standards.   Mountain Dog has been certified by CARPFM continuously since 2009.

Achieving HACCP certification in addition to CARPFM certification reinforces Mountain Dog Food’s commitment to quality and food safety.

Mountain Dog Foods was established in 2000, with a commitment to providing safe and affordable raw pet food to pet owners throughout Canada
